We’re looking for 7 directors for our unconventional soap opera series. The workshop and shootings take place during 5 days in Marseille, February 2013. (The general info about the project here).
Each selected director will direct and edit one episode of a 10-minute webseries. The NISI MASA SOAP project is about collaborative filmmaking, so the director-editors will also take part in the writing, and help each other out in the shootings when not directing their own episode.
To apply a director-editor you’ll need to:
- fill out the questions and info requested in the application form.
In the application form you are asked to present a consept of a “New kind of Soap Opera series”. For this question, here’s something that might help you on your way:
The main characteristics that define soap operas are “an emphasis on family life, personal relationships, sexual dramas, emotional and moral conflicts; some coverage of topical issues; set in familiar domestic interiors with only occasional excursions into new locations”. Fitting in with these characteristics, most soap operas follow the lives of a group of characters who live or work in a particular place, or focus on a large extended family. The storylines follow the day-to-day activities and personal relationships of these characters. “Soap narratives, like those of film melodramas, are marked by what Steve Neale has described as ‘chance meetings, coincidences, missed meetings, sudden conversions, last-minute rescues and revelations, deus ex machina endings.'” These elements may be found across the gamut of soap operas, from EastEnders to Dallas.
The selection committee will base the evaluation of the director-editor candidates on:
- the quality and development of ideas, style and methods proposed for the workshop
- the motivation to take part in the project –
- suitability to attend an intensive 5-day workshop based on collaborative filmmaking
- skills and creativity and the cogency of the sample work
